THE SPIRITUAL WAR AGAINST US: WHY EVIL IS PERSONAL

Why does evil seem so personal? Why does it feel like there’s always something actively working against our souls being at peace? Why do we struggle to believe, and why does the enemy of our faith seem to have such particular hatred for humanity?

Like so many other questions of faith, I look at the Bible for answers. While Scripture may not be explicit about the connection between his fall from heaven and his hatred for humankind, these are my thoughts.

The Plan That Sparked a War

When God announced His intention to create humanity, He revealed an important aspect of His creation. These new beings would be made in His very image, bearing a dignity and destiny that would ultimately surpass even the angels themselves.

Initially, humans would start lower than the angels in power and glory, but God’s plan was for humanity to be served by angels in this life and then, in the age to come, to be elevated above them entirely. Scripture says we who follow Christ will one day judge angels. We will be transformed into the very likeness of Christ Himself, sharing in His glory in ways that even the highest created beings cannot.

This would shatter the established order of heaven, and Satan was not pleased.

Here was a being who had been among the highest of God’s creatures, beautiful beyond measure, wise beyond comparison, holding a place of honor in the very presence of the Almighty. And now God was announcing that these newcomers, these beings made from dust, would eventually outrank him. They would inherit what he had always believed should be his alone.

Pride Before the Fall

Scripture tells us that Satan’s heart became proud because of his beauty. His wisdom was corrupted by his own splendor. When he looked at God’s plan for humanity, he saw it as a direct threat to everything he thought he deserved. If God was going to elevate humanity above the angels, where did that leave him? How could these beings made from dust eventually surpass the one who had stood closest to the throne, who had been given the highest privileges in all creation, and who wanted to be equal with God Himself?

So he rebelled. And in that rebellion, he persuaded a third of the angels to join him. It wasn’t enough for him to reject God’s plan. He had to convince others that this elevation of humanity was wrong, unfair, and an insult to them.

But God’s plan cannot be stopped by rebellious creatures. Humanity was created exactly as the Everlasting God intended, bearing His image, destined for glory. And Satan and his followers were cast out of heaven.

The Strategy of Spite

This is why Satan’s war against humanity feels so personal, because it is. Every human soul that falls to sin is a victory against God’s plan. Every person who chooses darkness over light, every life destroyed by addiction or despair, every heart hardened against the love of Christ, represents a small defeat of God’s intention to raise humanity to glory.

Satan’s strategy has remained consistent throughout history. He tries to hide the fact that we are created in the image of God by burying it behind our sin and rebellion. He entices humans to serve him rather than their Creator, all in an effort to prevent the ultimate glorification that God intends for His people.

He can’t become equal to God. That battle was lost long ago. And so, he tries to drag down those whom God loves, to corrupt those made in God’s image, to prove that humanity isn’t worthy of the destiny God has planned for them.

The Personal Nature of Spiritual Warfare

Evil is not random. It is targeted, from a being who sees every human as a living reminder of his own failure and rebellion. When you choose to follow Christ, when you grow in holiness, when you reflect more clearly the image of God you were created to bear, you become everything he can’t stand.

He hates what you represent. He despises what you’re becoming. And he will use every weapon in his arsenal to prevent you from reaching the glory God intends for you.

But God’s plan included his rebellion. The hostility that drives Satan’s war against humanity has become part of our redemption. Through suffering, through spiritual battles, through God’s refining fire, we become more like Christ, not less.

The Victory Already Won

In his desperate attempt to prevent us from being glorified with Christ, Satan has actually contributed to it. Souls continue to emerge victorious from spiritual battles, shining brighter with the glory of God. People continue to choose faith over fear, love over hatred, service over selfishness, in step with God’s original plan.

And in the end, when Christ returns and we are transformed into His likeness, when we do indeed judge angels and share in His eternal glory, Satan’s rebellion will be seen for what it truly was: the futile rage of a creature who could not accept that God’s ways are higher than his ways, and God’s thoughts higher than his thoughts.

We are more than conquerors through Him who loved us. The ancient grudge that drives Satan’s hatred will ultimately serve only to magnify the grace and glory of God displayed in our redemption.

The war is real. The enemy is personal. But the victory is certain.
